Farley Granger (1925–2011) was an American actor whose boyish good looks and emotional intensity made him a star of the post-war era. Born in San Jose, California, he was discovered by a casting director while still in high school. He is best remembered for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, specifically in two of the director's most psychological thrillers. In "Rope" (1948), Granger played one half of a pair of intellectuals who commit a murder to prove their superiority—a role laced with subtext. He followed this with "Strangers on a Train" (1951), playing the tennis pro who unwittingly enters into a murder pact. These roles defined his screen persona: vulnerable, morally ambiguous, and undeniably compelled. Granger eventually walked away from his Hollywood contract to pursue stage work in New York and later worked extensively in Italian cinema, appearing in everything from Luchino Visconti films to spaghetti westerns. He was also known for his candor about his bisexuality, living openly in an era when it was professionally dangerous to do so. His memoir, "Include Me Out," is considered a classic of Hollywood truth-telling. Farley Granger was a matinee idol with the soul of a character actor. He refused to be boxed in by the studio system, forging a career that was as unconventional as it was distinguished.
