Natalie Trundy (1940-2019) was an American actress best known for her unique contribution to the "Planet of the Apes" franchise. Born in Boston, Trundy began her career as a child model and actress in New York City, appearing on Broadway and in live television broadcasts. Her early promise was evident, and she was seen as a rising star in the industry. However, a serious car accident in her early twenties briefly stalled her momentum, a setback she overcame with resilience. Trundy's legacy is inextricably linked to the "Planet of the Apes" series, produced by her husband, Arthur P. Jacobs. She holds the distinction of playing three different characters—a mutant human, a human doctor, and a chimpanzee—across four of the five original films. As the telepathic mutant Albina in "Beneath the Planet of the Apes," she brought an eerie intensity to the role. In "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," she played Dr. Stephanie Branton, a sympathetic human ally to the time-traveling apes. Her most significant role in the franchise was as Lisa, the chimpanzee who becomes the mate of Caesar, in "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" and "Battle for the Planet of the Apes." Despite being covered in heavy prosthetic makeup, Trundy managed to convey emotion and character, contributing to the emotional core of the later films. She was the only person to play a human, a mutant, and an ape in the original series. After the untimely death of her husband in 1973, Trundy took over his production company, APJAC Productions, showing her capabilities as a businesswoman in a male-dominated industry. She produced the film "Huckleberry Finn" before largely retiring from the screen to focus on her family. Natalie Trundy's career is a fascinating chapter in Hollywood history. While her roles were often defined by her connection to the "Apes" saga, her ability to adapt to such varied parts within a single franchise showcases her versatility. She remains a beloved figure among fans of classic science fiction.
